Breitling is a Swiss watchmaker with a pilot's heritage, but two things set it apart from the storied brands it sits beside. It is owned by private equity rather than a family or a foundation, and it has built its public identity around an unusually aggressive sustainability program, including a pledge to abandon mined diamonds for lab-grown ones. Its most concrete political engagement is over trade policy: in 2025 Breitling itself retained a Washington lobbying firm to work on tariffs and its chief executive publicly criticized the Trump administration's duties on Swiss goods, while its majority owner, Partners Group, joined a delegation of Swiss executives who pressed President Donald Trump for tariff relief in late 2025.[1][5][14][15] Breitling was founded in 1884 in Saint-Imier and is now based in Grenchen, Switzerland.[1]
- A Breitling was the first Swiss wristwatch in space, worn on a 1962 orbital flight.
- Breitling hired a DC lobbying firm and publicly opposed Trump's 39% tariff on Swiss goods.
- The brand is dropping mined diamonds for lab-grown ones and tracks materials with blockchain passports.
- Once family-run, Breitling is now controlled by private equity, with Partners Group the majority owner.
- Breitling became the NFL's official timepiece partner in 2025, with editions for all 32 teams.
Quick Take
Breitling takes no partisan political positions, and no Breitling federal political action committee or US campaign-contribution record was identified in this review; US law also bars foreign companies from giving to American candidates. Two threads are worth a values-minded shopper's attention. First, trade policy and ownership: Breitling was one of Switzerland's last independent family watchmakers until 2017 and is now controlled by the Swiss private equity firm Partners Group, and in 2025 both the company and its owner engaged on US tariffs, with Breitling retaining a Washington lobbying firm and Partners Group's executives joining the Swiss business delegation that pressed Trump to roll back a 39 percent tariff on Swiss goods in November 2025.[4][5][6][14] Second, values: under CEO Georges Kern, Breitling has made environmental sustainability a central brand identity, publishing annual reports and committing to lab-grown diamonds, traceable gold, and renewable energy.[7][8] Neither thread reflects a stated ideology; both are documented behavior.
Owned by Private Equity
Breitling was founded in 1884 by Léon Breitling and made its name on chronographs and aviation instruments, including the Navitimer, which Willy Breitling developed in 1952 at the request of the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) as a wrist-worn flight computer for pilots.[1][12] A decade later, in 1962, astronaut Scott Carpenter wore a custom 24-hour Navitimer Cosmonaute on his Mercury-Atlas 7 orbital flight, which Breitling cites as the first Swiss wristwatch in space.[16] For most of its history it was family owned, and by the 2010s it was one of Switzerland's last large independent, family-controlled watchmakers.[4] That ended in 2017, when the private equity firm CVC Capital Partners bought a majority stake from the Schneider family and installed Georges Kern, a former IWC and Richemont executive, as chief executive and a shareholder.[4] In 2022, the Swiss private equity firm Partners Group acquired the majority stake from CVC, and Partners Group co-founder Alfred Gantner became chairman of Breitling's board; CVC and management, including Kern, retained holdings.[2][3] Kern has stressed that Breitling "remains privately owned and independent."[3]
Because Breitling is private, it does not publish detailed public financial statements, and its political footprint is best understood through its owners rather than any disclosures of its own.
Politics and Trade Policy
Breitling's documented political activity centers on trade policy rather than partisan positioning. In September 2025, Breitling itself retained Ballard Partners, a Washington lobbying firm with close ties to the Trump administration, for work related to trade and tariffs, according to industry reporting on the filing.[14] The following month, CEO Georges Kern publicly criticized the Trump administration's 39 percent tariff on Swiss goods, calling it deeply damaging for Switzerland, and Breitling raised prices about 4 percent globally to offset the added export cost.[15] These are business-interest positions on a specific trade policy, not partisan endorsements.
At the ownership level, in November 2025 Partners Group was among the Swiss firms, alongside Rolex, MSC, Mercuria, Richemont, and the gold refiner MKS, whose executives met Trump in the Oval Office to seek relief from that tariff; the rate was later cut to 15 percent under a framework agreement announced on November 14, 2025.[5][6][17] That engagement belongs to Partners Group as an investor and would recur for any company the firm owns. CVC Capital Partners, the co-owner, is a European private equity firm with its own lobbying presence in Brussels.
No partisan political endorsements, US candidate contributions, or Breitling federal political action committee were identified in this review, and US federal law bars foreign companies and foreign nationals from contributing to American candidates. Political-finance disclosures for the owners in Switzerland and the EU were not established here and are worth confirming.
The Sustainability Mission
The most distinctive part of Breitling's public identity is environmental. Since taking over in 2017, Kern has positioned the brand as "approachable, casual, and sustainable" neo-luxury, and in 2020 the company launched a formal Sustainability Mission, publishing an annual report on its progress.[7][8] The commitments are specific and unusual for the industry. Breitling said it would move its new main-collection pieces to lab-grown diamonds and shift to artisanal, traceable gold sourced through the Swiss Better Gold Association, with the diamonds certified to the SCS-007 standard and grown by selected Indian suppliers that it says run, in most cases, on renewable energy.[8][9] Through its Origins label, it records the provenance of the gold and diamonds in those watches in a blockchain-backed digital passport, or NFT, that travels with each piece, and it reports a goal of sourcing lab-grown diamonds for all new main-collection products by the end of 2026.[7][13] Breitling says it has moved to roughly 73 percent renewable energy across its properties, up from 53 percent a year earlier, reports carbon neutrality on its measured operational emissions through renewables and offsets, and has run a partnership with the Ocean Conservancy since 2018.[7] It also reports employee share ownership and an annual pay-gap analysis.[10] These are the company's own stated goals and claims about what it will do, and independent verification of the results is limited.
Products and Services
Breitling makes Swiss mechanical and quartz watches organized around the themes of air, land, and sea, with signature lines including the Navitimer, Chronomat, Superocean, Avenger, and Premier.[1] Under Kern the brand adopted a more casual, retro-modern design language and a marketing approach built around celebrity "squads." It sells through its own boutiques, a growing direct-to-consumer channel, and authorized retailers worldwide, with the United States identified by its owners as a priority growth market.[2]
Recent News
Breitling's ownership settled into its current form when Partners Group took majority control in 2022.[3] In 2025 the company issued its fifth annual sustainability report, detailing progress toward lab-grown diamonds and renewable energy, and its majority owner joined the Swiss business push to reduce Trump's tariffs on Swiss watches.[5][7] In August 2025, Breitling signed a multiyear global agreement to become the official timepiece partner of the National Football League, its biggest US sports tie-up and part of a push to grow its American business, releasing team-edition watches for all 32 clubs.[11] Like the rest of the Swiss watch industry, Breitling faced a softer luxury market and the disruption of the 2025 US tariff, which was reduced from 39 percent to 15 percent under a framework deal in November 2025.[5][6][17]
Where to Find Them
