Ridley Scott's film puts a commercial towing crew on a detour to answer a signal from an empty world, and one of them comes back carrying something. The ship is grimy and industrial, the crew argue about shares and overtime, and the horror arrives as a workplace problem nobody aboard is equipped to handle. Tom Skerritt, Sigourney Weaver, Veronica Cartwright, Harry Dean Stanton, John Hurt, and Ian Holm make up the crew of the Nostromo, and the creature designs by H.R. Giger gave the picture a look nothing else had. Weaver's Ripley is the reason the series kept going.
