Shonda Rhimes's medical drama follows Meredith Grey, played by Ellen Pompeo, from surgical intern to chief of surgery at a Seattle teaching hospital, with the personal lives of the staff getting as much screen time as the operating room. Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr. have been with the show since the pilot, and Patrick Dempsey, Sandra Oh, and Katherine Heigl anchored its early years. Still airing on ABC after more than twenty seasons, it is the longest-running primetime medical drama in American television history.
