Christopher Nolan closes his Batman trilogy eight years after the events of The Dark Knight, with Bruce Wayne living as a recluse until a masked mercenary named Bane lays siege to Gotham. Christian Bale returns as Batman, Tom Hardy plays Bane, Anne Hathaway is cat burglar Selina Kyle, and Gary Oldman, Michael Caine, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt fill out the cast. The film grossed over a billion dollars and ends the series on a note of sacrifice and succession.
