Robert Wise adapted the Rodgers and Hammerstein stage musical and made the film that finally unseated Gone with the Wind at the box office. Julie Andrews plays Maria, a postulant sent from her Salzburg abbey to govern the seven children of a widowed naval captain played by Christopher Plummer, and she stays long enough to change the household and then help it slip out of Austria after the Anschluss. Eleanor Parker plays the baroness Maria displaces and Peggy Wood the Mother Abbess. It won five Academy Awards including Best Picture.
